The bakery

A shop on Carrer del Golf de Cadis, an oven in plain sight and recipes that are not from here. Everything else follows from that.

A barista working at the coffee machine behind the counter

It all starts before dawn

Before the neighbourhood wakes there is already dough on the marble. Kneaded, laminated, left to rise, baked and finished by hand, batch after batch, until the door closes at half past two.

There is no central bakery and no van bringing trays. The oven stands six metres from the tables and is visible from the counter: if something turns out well, you watched it come out.

antojo

The name

Antojo, in Spanish, is not hunger. It is wanting something right now, without a reason and without permission — the exact word for what happens when you walk in for a coffee and walk out with two alfajores.

Now look at the lettering. The J is a capital. That is where the name folds and keeps two first names inside it — the names of the people who brought the recipes over.

Still to confirmThe two names behind AntoJo's. It is the best opening this story has, and right now nowhere tells it.

A linen napkin with a line drawing: alfajor tin, alfajor and medialuna

The drawing on the napkin

The linen napkins carry a single-line drawing of what the place holds: the alfajor tin, the alfajor and the medialuna. You do not need to read a menu to know what you came for. That same drawing runs through this website.

Who stands behind the glass

A small team that kneads, bakes, serves and cleans without dividing the roles too strictly. The person who brings your coffee is usually the one who shaped your medialuna.

Still to confirmNames and roles of the team, and a group photograph. Putting faces to an open bakery is worth more than any sentence.

The coffee is finished at the counter, in plain sight, like everything else.
