An Argentine craving, two streets from the sea.

Butter medialunas out of the oven at eight, cornflour alfajores that dissolve on the tongue, and coffee served without hurry. All of it made right here, in es Molinar.

Nothing arrives by van. What you see in the cabinet was kneaded this morning, behind the glass, six metres from your table.

Recipes that crossed the Atlantic

Cornflour, dulce de leche, puff pastry. These are not local pastries with an Argentine name: they are the ones from over there, made the way they are made over there.

The bakery is in the room

The oven stands in the room. While you wait for your coffee you can watch where the thing you are about to eat comes from.

Your dog comes in with you

Fresh water by the door and a place in the shade. Nobody waits outside tied to a lamppost here.

Open six days. On Tuesday the oven rests.

It is the one rule worth remembering. The rest of the week we are here from eight — and the best of the tray rarely survives until ten.
